I have two rifles, 1:28 and 1:48. I've worked up good loads using Lee REAL bullets. I've been using TC lube 1000+. I read through the threads on Doug's old board and notice a rather heated disscussion took place last Nov. What I got out of it was - NEVER USE 1000+. So my queston is, What is a good home made lube to use on conicals?? 50/50 besswax and olive oil??. I gather any lube will require a wax which will result in a tar build up that can only be cleaned using gasoline (or the like). Are there any alternatives??
PS: I use Pyrodex

PS PS; Mr. Knight are you out there?? -- Help!!!

I use bore butter 1000+, its a good lube , I just scrub the barrel real good with soapy water, dry good with patches then run patch soaked with a good gun oil up and down barrel. I don't buy the seasoning garbage. but it is a good lube.

I've used bore butter since it first came out.It is the only lube that i will use.But you still have to use common sense cleaning after use.The trouble people has with bore butter is they use way to much and what they mistake for rust really isn't.I will say never use a water base lube you will be sorry in the long run.I have a cva trapper shotgun hanging in my cabin that hasn't been cleaned since 1992 (utility gun)but seasoned properly with bore butter that has not pitted. This is just my observations but i won't use anything else and i've tryed them all.

Paul,
When I first got into muzzleloading we lubed conicals with vaseline.

If you must use the bore butter figure on scrubbing the bore out with a good solvent about once a year. Carb or brake cleaner would do.

But most importantly. With Pyrodex and any lube you want to give the gun a good cleaning after shooting it. Then a day or two later you go down the bore with a clean patch. If it comes back with ANY brown stain showing you clean it again.
DO NOT buy the tale that the lube stops rust and corrosion. No way! No how!

Lots of people use just plain white crisco for a conical lube. There won't be any wax buildup this way. I haven't shot enough minies to even pretend I know a lot about it, but crisco does work for me, so far, in my 1858 enfield. I don't lube until I'm ready to load- and crisco would be a messy problem if ya tried to prelube a bunch.

My first ML was a .58 rifle-musket, and crisco worked fine. I've used it as a patch lube with good results as well; straight in very hot weather back in VA, mixed with olive oil where it's cooler.

Paul I've heard that alot of fellows use Neatsfoot oil and beeswax 50/50. However if you do this make sure the neetsfoot oil is the old kind made out of oil from cow hooves not the new synthetic kind. If this is not to your liking adjust the mix to suit yourself.
I shoot primarily rbs but have heard this is a good conical lube.
